How powder coating behaves under Dubai sun — standard vs superdurable grades, RAL colour choice, coastal considerations and what affects lead time.
What powder coating actually is
Dry polyester powder is applied electrostatically to the aluminium and then baked, so it flows into a continuous, hard film. It is not paint in any meaningful sense — it is far tougher, and it bonds to the metal rather than sitting on it.
Standard vs superdurable
This is the specification line that matters most in Dubai, and it is the one most quotes leave out.
| Grade | UV performance | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard architectural | Adequate in shade; chalks under sustained UV | Interior, shaded, north-facing |
| Superdurable polyester | Holds colour and gloss far longer | Anything in direct sun — pergolas, external doors, balustrades |
If a quote for an external structure does not state the coating grade, ask. The price difference is modest; the difference in how it looks after four summers is not.
Choosing a colour
Any standard RAL reference is available. In practice most Dubai projects land on matt black (RAL 9005), anthracite (RAL 7016), bronze, white (RAL 9016) or a natural anodised look.
Two practical notes. Dark colours get significantly hotter in direct sun, which matters for anything you touch and slightly increases thermal movement across long spans. And matt finishes show fingerprints and cleaning marks more readily than satin — worth knowing on a door handle stile.
Coastal exposure
Salt air is aggressive. On the Palm, in Marina and along the coast generally, the pre-treatment before coating matters as much as the coating itself — it is what stops corrosion creeping under the film from any edge or scratch. Specify accordingly and expect the fabricator to raise it before you do.
Lead time
Stock colours are quick. A custom RAL typically adds around a week, because it is a separate batch through the coating line. If your programme is tight, ask which colours are running as stock before you fall in love with one that is not.
FAQ
How long does powder coating last in Dubai?
In shade or interior use, a very long time. In direct sun, the grade decides it — standard architectural coatings chalk and fade within a few years, superdurable coatings hold colour far longer.
Can existing aluminium be re-coated?
Yes. It has to be stripped back and re-treated properly first — coating over a degraded finish just traps the problem underneath.
Does a custom colour cost more?
The powder itself is a modest difference. The bigger cost is time — a custom RAL usually adds around a week for a separate batch through the coating line.
