What makes an aluminium pergola work in Dubai — section sizes and spans, louvre options, powder-coat durability in UV, and the fixing details that decide whether it lasts.
Why aluminium rather than timber or steel
Timber moves, splits and needs re-treating every year or two in this climate. Steel is strong but rusts wherever the coating is broken, and in coastal Dubai that happens faster than people expect. Aluminium does neither — it does not rust, it holds a powder-coat finish well, and it is light enough to span sensibly without heavy foundations.
Section sizes and spans
This is where pergola quotes quietly differ. A pergola that looks identical in a drawing can be built from a section that will deflect visibly under summer thermal load, or one that will not.
The rafter section has to suit the span, and the span has to account for both the dead load and the movement aluminium goes through between a 20°C night and a 48°C afternoon. Undersized sections do not fail dramatically; they sag, and the sag never comes back out.
Fixed, louvred or motorised
- Fixed blades — simplest, cheapest, no moving parts to service. Shade is whatever the blade angle gives you.
- Manual louvres — adjustable blade angle, so you can chase shade through the day. Modest cost increase.
- Motorised louvres — the same, driven by a motor, often with a rain sensor. Best experience, highest cost, and the one component that will eventually need a service call.
Powder coating and UV
Dubai sun is brutal on coatings. Standard architectural powder coat is adequate in shade but will chalk and fade on a fully exposed structure. For a pergola, a superdurable-grade polyester coating is the specification worth paying for — it holds colour and gloss far longer under UV.
Dark colours look excellent and get significantly hotter. That matters for anything you might touch, and it slightly increases thermal movement across the structure.
Fixings and drainage
Two details decide whether a pergola is still tight in five years. First, what the posts are fixed into — a post bolted into thin paving rather than a proper pad is a wind-load problem waiting to happen. Second, where the water goes. Integrated gutters and downpipes inside the posts look clean and work well, provided they are actually sized for a Dubai downpour rather than a drizzle.
FAQ
How long does an aluminium pergola last in Dubai?
The aluminium itself will outlast the building. The variables are the coating and the fixings — a superdurable powder coat and properly bedded post fixings are what keep it looking and performing well past ten years.
Are motorised louvres worth it?
If you will actually use the space through the day, yes — being able to chase shade changes how usable a terrace is. If the pergola mainly shades a fixed seating area, fixed blades do the job for far less.
How long does a pergola take to install?
Typically 2–4 weeks from measurement, depending on the section sizes, whether louvres are motorised, and powder-coating turnaround on custom colours.
