Planning glass partitions for a Dubai office — single vs double glazed, acoustic performance, door options and how to phase installation without shutting the floor.
Why glass partitions instead of walls
Glass partitions buy you enclosure without buying you darkness. In a Dubai office where daylight usually arrives from one facade, a stud wall two metres in front of the window turns half the floor plate into a corridor. Glass keeps the light and still gives you a room.
The part everyone underestimates: acoustics
The most common complaint about a new glass office is that you can hear everything. That is almost always a specification problem, not a glass problem.
| Build-up | Typical use | Speech privacy |
|---|---|---|
| Single 10mm toughened | Open zones, visual separation | Low |
| Single laminated acoustic | Focus rooms | Moderate |
| Double glazed, air gap | Meeting rooms | Good |
| Double glazed acoustic laminated | Boardrooms, HR, legal | Best |
Two details undo all of it: the gap at the head of the partition, and the door. If the partition stops at a suspended ceiling with an open plenum above it, sound simply travels over the top. If the door is a hollow slab with no seals, it does not matter what the glass is.
Door options
Framed glass doors are the workhorse — robust, easy to seal, and cheapest to service. Frameless doors on patch fittings look far better and cost more, both up front and when a closer eventually needs replacing. Sliding and pocket doors save floor area in tight layouts but are harder to seal acoustically.
Manifestation and privacy
Full-height glass needs visible markings so people do not walk into it. That requirement is usually met with a frosted band or applied film, which is also where branding and graded privacy get delivered. Plan it at design stage — retrofitting film to installed glass always looks retrofitted.
Installing without shutting the office
Partition work is noisy in short bursts and quiet the rest of the time. We normally cut and drill off site, deliver in the evening, and glaze overnight or across a weekend, so the floor is usable the next working morning. Building access rules and lift booking usually drive the programme more than the fabrication does.
FAQ
Do glass partitions actually block sound?
A properly specified double-glazed acoustic partition blocks a great deal. A single-glazed partition that stops at a suspended ceiling blocks very little, because sound travels over the top through the plenum.
Can office partitions be installed without closing the office?
Yes. We routinely phase partition installations across evenings and weekends, with the noisy cutting done off site.
Do glass partitions need markings?
Full-height glazing needs visible manifestation so people do not walk into it — usually a frosted band or applied film, which can carry branding at the same time.
